The origin of May Day

5.1 International Labor Day is on May 1 every year. It is the whole world’s common festival of the labour. As for the causes of the 51 are as follows:



This festival comes from the worker’s big strike of American Chicago. On May 1 in 1886, 200,000 workers of Chicago struck for practicing eight hours’ work time. After many uphill bloody battles, they finally won. For memorizing this labour movement, In July 14 1889, Marxists from all countries called a meeting in France.



On the conference, delegates all agreed that : May 1 was settled for the 

international proletariat’s Common festival. This resolution got the workers from all around the world responded to it actively. On May 1 in 1890, the working class of Euro-American countries took the lead to go into the street, holding a grand demonstration and a meeting, fighting for the legal rights. From now on, May 1 has been an international festival for labour workers to celebrate.



  The Chinese people’s celebrating the activity of the Labor Day can trace back to 1918. In this year, some intellectuals of revolution in Shanghai, Suzhou and other cities sent handbills to introduce “51” to people. After new China’s establishment, our country settled “51” for the legal Labor’ Day in December of 1949.
